CEO & Co-Founder’s Message
Hi there, I’m Tendisai Cromwell and I’d like to share our origin story with you. Bioimmersive began in the woods across Southern Ontario.
I’ve spent a considerable amount of time over the last few years in the woods and on the water deepening an already lifelong relationship I have with nature.
Over time, I began to notice the quality of being that emerges when immersed in nature, particularly around trees, among my favourite living beings. There were many days that I would emerge from a forest and some new insight would also emerge. Most days, though, I was just trying to alleviate the deep world-weariness I developed over the pandemic.
At the same time, I also embarked upon a journey to transition to UX design and immersive tech. In a moment of searching for a way to bring my love of nature and my commitment to XR/design into harmony, I came upon biomimicry, a process that looks to nature to provide solutions for human design problems.
Biomimicry formalizes what my ancestors in Zimbabwe, Trinidad, Grenada and Indigenous peoples globally already know: that nature can be a source of answers to many questions including how best to go about living and being in this world.
This exploration—the merging of these seemingly disparate pursuits and passions—gave birth to Bioimmersive, a studio and lab that is built on the belief that immersive technologies have the unique potential to bring about empathy, promote action, and provide some of the benefits of nature, a belief supported by research.
The reality of our collective relationship with the natural world is grim: We are in the midst of an unfolding, human-induced climate catastrophe.
The recognition of this reality informs the mission of Bioimmersive. We are devoted to supporting organizations and individuals that are advancing environmental causes. And because there is almost nothing that environmental concerns do not touch, we will use XR technology to address interconnected social issues.
We don’t want people to spend more time with digital technologies, in fact we want less of this. As a tech company, this goal may seem counterintuitive. If someone engages in an immersive experience that Bioimmersive creates, and this results in them spending less time on their devices and more time in nature or engaging in a climate action, we have succeeded.
I feel honoured to be building Bioimmersive alongside Joshua Alan Young, our Chief Technology Officer and Sharon Cromwell, our Chief Strategy Officer.
